The Florida Native Butterfly Society (501c3) a nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect & raise our Florida Native Butterfly species through education, preservation & creating more green space.
Mission: Our Southwest Florida educational facility is providing the appropriate educational programs and research projects that are helping butterfly populations flourish throughout our state! We thank you for your support of our facility and operation.
A vital part of your experience with us includes our in-house garden presentations. We focus on giving a visitor the educational tools they need to incorporate the necessary elements it takes to invite nature into their own backyards. Discover what is needed to attract hundreds of butterflies to your garden!
We are actively raising and releasing butterflies each week to share with our guests the amazing life cycle of butterflies. We are one of the few facilities in the nation that can actively breed Lepidoptera because we do not have exotic species. Our focus is our incredible diverse and beautiful Southwest Florida Butterflies and Moths.
We hope to give our guests the information, education and inspiration to get outside and plant butterfly gardens no matter where they reside. It truly is a remarkable feeling when you transform your yard with colorful blossoms and a healthy butterfly population.

Our 3,615 glazed glass butterfly house is the only facility of its kind that is dedicated to safeguard of our incredible and diverse native butterflies of Southwest Florida. Our primary goal is to educate our guests on the importance of building butterfly habitats and protecting our natural environment where ever they may reside. This is truly an amazing experience.
Unlike most facilities, we are allowed to breed butterflies. This gives our visitors as chance to witness the entire process of metamorphosis. We are actively breeding several different species throughout the year. This is contingent on the time of the year and weather conditions.
This project was privately funded by Lee County residents Jerry and Gail Johnson and public donations. The building was commissioned by Rough Brothers of Cincinnati, Ohio in 2008 and home to the The Florida Native Butterfly Society a Non Profit Organization (501c3). Our facility relies on donations to allow our staff and volunteers to continue our mission. We thank you for your visit and hope that you will build a butterfly habitat where you live!
Please Note: Butterflies are extremely sensitive to temperature and will not fly in rainy or cold conditions.
We want you to feel at home when you visit.
Every one of us is eager to teach you more about butterflies.
Our staff will provide the expert ideas on what to plant in your garden.
